Cavendish Overpass

  Notre-Dame-de-Grâce Tunnel

Rebuilding of the walls and floor of the Champlain dry dock of MIL Davie (Lévis, Quebec)

Work to be performed: concrete stripping of walls and drilling of dowels in walls and floor.

Period: June to November 2001

Challenges and special requirements:

  • Great precision was required to protect the granite steps and keep stripping depth to a minimum, thus reducing resurfacing costs

  • Stripping had to be done from the top and the bottom over a 50-foot high vertical plane

  • Methods had to be devised to work around obstacles and compensate for the reduced visibility of the work area when working from the top down

  • Vibrations and striking energy were a consideration when selecting the chisels

  • Deadlines could not be exceeded.

Equipment used:

  • Guiding frame with concrete machining tool
  • Hydraulic drilling autonomous tilting platform
  • CAT E120B excavator with hydraulic chisel
  • CAT E120B excavator with pneumatic drill
  • KX-41 excavator with pneumatic drill
